Charlie Sheen #Winning at Wrestlemania

March 2, 2011 7 comments

@CharlieSheen is the hot story of the last week.  Why?  Because it’s got all the elements that feed the beast of the media and spurs discussion. See how it all came to a head this past week in the video below.

Charlie started firing back after his CBS sitcom was shelved for the year.  Once his publicist quit, he started lining up interviews.  Here is a clip from his Piers Morgan CNN interview.

Charlie opened a Twitter account yesterday and in one day has nearly 900,000 followers.  My friend Andrea Feczko (@AndreaFeckzo) has a show called Hot Mess and Charlie Sheen is our favorite hot mess now.  Like him or hate him, we’re all talking about him.  My gut tells me there is one billionaire who looks at this story and sees money.  Vince McMahon once considered having Stone Cold Steve Austin give OJ Simpson a Stone Cold Stunner.

WWE is on an upswing with the return of the Rock, Steve Austin, the Undertaker and Triple H.  This Wrestlemania will shape the future direction of the company who has seen it’s PPV buy rates soften in the last three years.  The WWE brand went “PG” three years ago and has been missing that edge.  The Rock blazed right past the PG line with his first two promos back and John Cena brought back his edgy rap persona.  Is there anyone more edgy right now then Charlie Sheen?    Charlie Sheen was making 1.8 million dollars an episode for Two and Half Men.  Imagine the promotional value WWE would get out of the following scenario for this Wrestlemania and the debut of Tough Enough.

Charlie with one of his Godesses

Charlie Sheen tweets that he’s going to WWE this Monday to recruit new goddesses.  One simple 140 character tweet would set ablaze a media frenzy for his live appearance on USA Network.   During RAW, every WWE diva would be in the ring.  Charlie comes out and is… well… Charlie Sheen.  Charlie says that he can do what he wants, when he wants.  And he’s taking EVERY WWE Diva with him from the WWE.  The WWE divas won’t be seen again until Wrestlemania where he is having a huge party in the ring.   Sheen is inviting any man “tough enough” to party with him.  Charlie walks out with every diva, loads them in a limo and is gone until he returns at Wrestlemania.

Also promoted for this week’s RAW is the return of Stone Cold Steve Austin to promote Tough Enough.  Austin says he’ll be at Wrestlemania and heard Charlie Sheen.  Austin says that he’s “tough enough” to have a beer with Charlie Sheen at Wrestlemania.  Austin then brings up that anyone who has ever had a beer with Stone Cold shares one thing thing in common.  Austin throws to a video of people he’s had beers with and then end result.  THEY ALL GET STUNNED.   Austin cracks a beer and leaves.

Angle shot.  Nothing more needed.  The idea of Stone Cold Steve Austin stunning Charlie Sheen at the biggest event of the WWE’s year and on the same weekend that Tough Enough debuts is a very attractive thought.  If WWE had to pay Charlie Sheen 3.6 million dollars (1.8 million per episode that he was getting for his CBS sitcom) for these two simple appearances, it might be worth it to add onto the momentum.  Wrestlemania is the biggest event of WWE’s year and this year it’s the kick off to their return to reality TV with Tough Enough which launches on April 4th.

This idea would be a huge risk for the company. Charlie Sheen is a volatile personality right now.  Do they need to this?  They’ve done great work with the Rock/Cena stuff that will propel a lot of attention towards this event.  Charlie Sheen has everyone talking right now, can he help people talk about WWE too?
