My Wrestlemania Journey – Part 1 – #IWantWrestlemania

March 25, 2011 5 comments

The great Wrestlemania documentary out now WWE: The True Story of WrestleMania – DVD is a time warp back for me.  My favorite early wrestling memories go back to when I was 10 and 11 years old –  Wrestlemania 2 and 3.

The Lagana household didn’t get PPV until late in 1987; first event we had access to was Survivor Series 1987.  I became a huge fan of the British Bulldogs in 1985.  After seeing them come up short in winning the WWF Tag Team Titles on numerous occasions, I “knew” they had to win them at Wrestlemania 2.  Sadly I couldn’t talk my dad into taking me to watch the show on close circuit since it was on a Monday night.  It was a “school” night.

So when I heard the news from a friend the next day at school, I was so excited they won and couldn’t wait to see the video when it came out.  I remember waiting what felt like six months for that video to come in.  The first match I ever saw was Valentine and Beefcake winning the tag titles and knowing they were facing my favorite team at Wrestlemania for the belts was a must see for me.

The match is not the classic tag team battle of the age, but it was satisfying to see my heroes win.  Sadly Dynamite Kid was injured at this point in his career and it wasn’t til much later that I saw the amazing wrestling he did earlier in his career.  Getting to witness Wrestlemania 2 on tape made me want to see it live so bad.  I’d get that chance at Wrestlemania 3.

The Wrestlemania 3 clip from the WWE: The True Story of WrestleMania – DVD is some of  my favorite stuff in the DVD.  The people lined up at the Pontiac Silverdome before the show to the interview with Gorilla Monsoon and Lord Alfred Hayes before the show are the types of gems you get on the DVD.  I didn’t see any of that live that day because my journey to see my first Wrestlemania live was via closed circuit at the Philadelphia Spectrum.

In that clip above, Vince McMahon tearfully talks about his dad and feeling his presences as he stood in the ring at Wrestlemania 3; “it was a good thing”.   And for me, it was a good thing my dad always supported my love of wrestling.  If he didn’t support my hobby, it would have never turned into a career.  After missing Wrestlemania 2 live, he promised to take me to see Wrestlemania 3 via closed circuit.  I had been to the Spectrum to see wrestling but what we saw that day was unlike anything I could have imagined.

The opening shot of Wresltemania 3 featured that high wide shot of the huge audience in Pontiac, Michigan.  Up to that point, wrestling on TV featured small crowds. Live show I attended at the Spectrum would have anywhere from 8,000 to 15,000.  But that crowd in Pontiac was unlike anything I’ve ever seen.  The number of fans has always been a point of contention – was it 72,000, 78,000 or 93,000.  It didn’t matter to me.  That one shot let me know the potential of pro wrestling.

I learned from my first experience with Wrestlemania 2 and 3 – wrestling is amazing experience live.  It was a happening and you wanted to be a part of it live; however you could Live in the arena, pay per view or closed circuit.  I will be watching Wrestlemania live this year on PPV at a friends house.  The WWE production team makes it such a great show no matter where you watch it.  And what is exciting to me, there will be someone watching their very first Wrestlemania this year.

Charlie Sheen #Winning at Wrestlemania

March 2, 2011 7 comments

@CharlieSheen is the hot story of the last week.  Why?  Because it’s got all the elements that feed the beast of the media and spurs discussion. See how it all came to a head this past week in the video below.

Charlie started firing back after his CBS sitcom was shelved for the year.  Once his publicist quit, he started lining up interviews.  Here is a clip from his Piers Morgan CNN interview.

Charlie opened a Twitter account yesterday and in one day has nearly 900,000 followers.  My friend Andrea Feczko (@AndreaFeckzo) has a show called Hot Mess and Charlie Sheen is our favorite hot mess now.  Like him or hate him, we’re all talking about him.  My gut tells me there is one billionaire who looks at this story and sees money.  Vince McMahon once considered having Stone Cold Steve Austin give OJ Simpson a Stone Cold Stunner.

WWE is on an upswing with the return of the Rock, Steve Austin, the Undertaker and Triple H.  This Wrestlemania will shape the future direction of the company who has seen it’s PPV buy rates soften in the last three years.  The WWE brand went “PG” three years ago and has been missing that edge.  The Rock blazed right past the PG line with his first two promos back and John Cena brought back his edgy rap persona.  Is there anyone more edgy right now then Charlie Sheen?    Charlie Sheen was making 1.8 million dollars an episode for Two and Half Men.  Imagine the promotional value WWE would get out of the following scenario for this Wrestlemania and the debut of Tough Enough.

Charlie with one of his Godesses

Charlie Sheen tweets that he’s going to WWE this Monday to recruit new goddesses.  One simple 140 character tweet would set ablaze a media frenzy for his live appearance on USA Network.   During RAW, every WWE diva would be in the ring.  Charlie comes out and is… well… Charlie Sheen.  Charlie says that he can do what he wants, when he wants.  And he’s taking EVERY WWE Diva with him from the WWE.  The WWE divas won’t be seen again until Wrestlemania where he is having a huge party in the ring.   Sheen is inviting any man “tough enough” to party with him.  Charlie walks out with every diva, loads them in a limo and is gone until he returns at Wrestlemania.

Also promoted for this week’s RAW is the return of Stone Cold Steve Austin to promote Tough Enough.  Austin says he’ll be at Wrestlemania and heard Charlie Sheen.  Austin says that he’s “tough enough” to have a beer with Charlie Sheen at Wrestlemania.  Austin then brings up that anyone who has ever had a beer with Stone Cold shares one thing thing in common.  Austin throws to a video of people he’s had beers with and then end result.  THEY ALL GET STUNNED.   Austin cracks a beer and leaves.

Angle shot.  Nothing more needed.  The idea of Stone Cold Steve Austin stunning Charlie Sheen at the biggest event of the WWE’s year and on the same weekend that Tough Enough debuts is a very attractive thought.  If WWE had to pay Charlie Sheen 3.6 million dollars (1.8 million per episode that he was getting for his CBS sitcom) for these two simple appearances, it might be worth it to add onto the momentum.  Wrestlemania is the biggest event of WWE’s year and this year it’s the kick off to their return to reality TV with Tough Enough which launches on April 4th.

This idea would be a huge risk for the company. Charlie Sheen is a volatile personality right now.  Do they need to this?  They’ve done great work with the Rock/Cena stuff that will propel a lot of attention towards this event.  Charlie Sheen has everyone talking right now, can he help people talk about WWE too?
